History, purpose, activity and future of the Béla Horányi Clinical Neuroscience Society

Horányi Béla

Professor Béla Horányi was an outstanding person in Hungarian Neurology and Psychiatry, a worthy pursuer of the world-famous Schaffer school.

His work was fundamental in clinical neuroscience, both in neurology and psychiatry. He was President of the Hungarian Psychological Society. His work in neuropathology made him world famous. Professor Horányi passed away in 1986.

On 13 January 1989 his students, colleagues and admirers founded an exclusive scientific society called the Béla Horányi Clinical Neuroscience Society. The Society is based in the János Hospital (now known as the North-Central-Buda Center New St. John’s Hospital and Clinic).

The purpose of the Society was formulated in the articles of operation as follows:

„Within the field of clinical sciences an up-to-date presentation and, as far as possible, application of the results of so-called cutting-edge research, at the highest possible level.” Special attention is given to:
1) Cultivation of clinical neurosciences, and especially the follow-up of new results based on a unified approach instead of looking at only partial fields (psychiatry, psychology, neurology).
2) Nurturing the memory of Professor Horányi and his extensive scientific work.

Creating the Society and organizing its life is the merit of Professor Attila Lipcsey. He was also the first chairperson. His unfortunate early death understandably lead to temporary operational difficulties. The leadership was re-established in 2005 (Dr. Magda Stipula as president, Dr. László Döme as secretary general, Dr. Attila Márkus as economic secretary and Dr. András Folyovich as secretary). We continued the tradition, and the Society’s scientific meetings continued in St. John’s Hospital. In addition to Dr. Géza Gábor Kovács prion-researcher, Prof. Dr. Éva Fenyő (Stockholm), Prof. Dr. Katalin Haberland (Chicago), Prof. DR. Tamás Révész (London), Anna Dévény, Prof. Dr. Imre Szentirmai, Prof. Dr. Dániel Bereczki, Prof. Zoltán Nagy, young doctors from the Neurology Department of the St. John’s Hospital – Stroke Center also regularly gave lectures, demonstrating that there is continued interest in the Society.

The current president of the Society is Dr. András Folyovich, Chief Physician of the Department of Neurology – Stroke Center. Members of the Board are Dr. Eszter Abonyi, Dr. Anna Katalin Béres-Molnár, Dr. Eszter Dudás and Dr. Eszter Herczeg. The president emeritus is Professor Dr. Attila Lipcsey and the honorary president is Dr. Magda Stipula, Chief Physician (passed away in 2021).

Since its foundation, the Society has been a member of the community publishing Neuropathic Review and has representation on the Editorial Board.

It follows from the history of the Society that the founders were primarily colleagues of Professor Horányi. Involving talented young people in membership became a declared goal following the death of Professor Lipcsey. The passing on of traditions is via continuous rejuvenation.

Our Society, worthy of Professor Horányi’s memory, strives to create lasting value by combining traditional and modern approaches.
